As spiritual directors, men listen and process the searching and depth questions of spiritual directees. As spiritual directors we are invited into the land of process, ambivalence, movements, and depth questions. This Institute will assist men to live into the deeper questions of our lives and tend the Mystery present in the questions.

Spirituality and Health Care Institute:
Grateful for Gifts of Healing
Monday, April 12, 2010, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Vision the future of spiritual direction in health care. The morning will begin with an inspirational keynote presentation by Mary Jo Kreitzer, PhD, RN, the Founder and Director of the Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota, USA. The morning session concludes with a period of quiet, guided reflection. Afternoon breakout sessions will consist of in-depth, facilitated discussions of key issues in spirituality and health care. Together we will create a working document that flows from our deep listening as we examine the following questions:
- What are some creative ideas for group spiritual direction in a health care setting that can transform its unique challenges into blessings?
- What approaches might one use to measure outcomes of spiritual direction that would be considered valid for research and funding purposes?
- How might one promote spiritual direction as part of an integrative approach to healthcare?
We will open ourselves to the Spirit and each other during cycles of silence, listening, and conversation. Cost: USD$85.00.

Gratefulness Pilgrimage to the Mission District and Muir Woods
Monday, April 12, 2010, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
Update: the Pilgrimage is now full - you may choose to be placed on the waiting list when you register for the conference
Many people from Latin American countries have settled in the sunny Mission District of San Francisco. The struggle and beauty of their lives speak of a deep spirituality. An expression of their immigrant journey is the painting of murals—creating a visual theology that is both vibrant and revealing. We will spend an hour and a half on a walking tour of the murals, and then journey to the historic Mission Dolores, one of the fourteen original mission churches founded by Junipero Serra. Spanish-speaking spiritual directors who received spiritual director formation and training in the Mission District will accompany us and share their stories. A delicious midday meal in a neighborhood restaurant follows. Mary Ann Clifford Rodriguez, RSM, a native San Franciscan who lives in the Mission District will guide the morning pilgrimage.
In the afternoon, we will travel north across the Golden Gate bridge to Muir Woods to contemplate the Word of God in the natural world. Muir Woods is a protected stand of Coast Redwoods, hundreds of years old. These magnificent trees create a sacred space of deep silence and profound interconnectedness with all life. Muir Woods reveals an infinitely generative Mystery. Here we will open our minds and hearts to awe, gratefulness, and a commitment to cherish and protect our kinship with all life. Catherine Regan, PhD, is the guide for the afternoon pilgrimage. She serves on the Mercy Center Burlingame staff and is committed to living in harmony with all Creation and to the renewal of contemplative spiritual practices that help us wake up to our place in the family of life.
Cost: USD$100.00 includes transportation, midday meal, and admission fees.
